Family members of a senior public official, who belong to the ultra-Orthodox Religious Zionist movement (Hardal), called him on the morning before the elections. They explained to him, in all seriousness, that U.S. President Donald Trump was apparently expected to speak within hours with Rabbi Tau, the spiritual leader of the Noam party, and ask him to withdraw from the race in favor of Netanyahu. “The rabbi, by the way, will refuse,” they confidently informed him. The election results within the right-wing bloc brought almost all its components back down to their actual size. The Noam party collapsed to just a few thousand votes, losing not only its seat in the Knesset but also the last remnants of its self-respect. Ofer Winter wasted approximately 100,000 votes, most of which were effectively wasted from the outset—most of those voters had already supported Ayelet Shaked in 2022. Itamar Ben-Gvir dreamed of winning a double-digit number of Knesset seats, until he could no longer restrain himself and entered into a direct confrontation with Netanyahu. It was a grave mistake, born of arrogance and ending in failure. All that remained of his dreams of ten seats was Tally Gotliv. She will not become Minister of Justice, and he will not become Minister of Defense. Ofer Winter vanished into thin air, and Hendel can now turn his attention to founding yet another political party. Amid this narcissistic, self-unaware chaos, the responsible adults of the Israeli right emerged: Likud voters, most of them traditional and Mizrahi Jews, who determined the outcome of the election. They came from Holon, Bat Yam, Rishon LeZion, and Israel’s peripheral regions. These are people whose children make up the majority of the Israel Defense Forces. They are the people who were called “Bibi-ists,” a herd—people whom others tried to delegitimize under the guise of opposition to their party leader. Unlike the Religious Zionist camp, which was full of itself, they did not spend two years agonizing over a collection of splinter parties. They did not waste votes. Instead, they behaved with boring responsibility rather than hubris. On Tuesday, they quietly went to the polls. So quietly, in fact, that the opinion polls missed them entirely (remember the predictions of 18 seats for Likud?), and even the election-night exit polls failed to detect them. Presumably, this was also because the media, which is virtually devoid of people like them, has never understood what matters to them or what interests them. If he passes the electoral threshold, it will be an extraordinary political story: how he managed to get into the Knesset despite Likud's dead-set opposition to him, and above all, which bloc he will join? Winter declares he will go with Netanyahu. In the Netanyahu bloc they are convinced that when push comes to shove he will join the opposition. In a close-result scenario, his decision could determine who forms the next government. If he does not pass the threshold, it will be no less of a big story. In that case, tens of thousands of votes, and perhaps many more, could go to waste as far as the Netanyahu bloc is concerned. Votes that could be the difference between continued right-wing rule and a change of government. Winter may discover that you can decide an election even without being elected to the Knesset. His very decision to keep running raises quite a few question marks. Most polls place him below the threshold. True, there have been exceptional cases. The Pensioners in 2006, who started below the threshold and ended with seven seats; Benny Gantz, who in 2021 had already been politically eulogized, managed to finish with eight seats. But those are the exceptions, not the rule. Ask almost any right-winger whether they would be willing to take a significant risk of losing votes for their camp, precisely in such a close and sensitive election, against an organized opposition bloc seeking to replace the government. Many would likely say no. Winter says yes. He is going all the way. It may be that on Tuesday he will have a Rafi Eitan or a Benny Gantz moment. Meanwhile, his story is much more reminiscent of Eli Yishai, who in 2015 left Shas, came out against Aryeh Deri, founded the "Yachad" party and ran in the election. He was sure he would pass the threshold. Sure. Yoni Chetboun and other right-wingers joined him, he enjoyed a media embrace he was not used to as a Shas man, and everywhere he went he felt like a mega-celebrity. You couldn't walk down the street with him without a hug, a wave, a kiss or a compliment from citizens. People stopped him, blessed him, encouraged him. Yishai was convinced he was on his way to victory. But between a compliment on the street to someone familiar from TV and a ballot slip placed in the box there is an enormous distance. Yishai discovered it the hard way. His party received more than 125,000 votes, but did not pass the threshold. Winter too is enjoying an extraordinary media embrace these days. Whenever he wants, he goes on air. That's not a given. Ask Pnina Tamano-Shata, Efrat Rayten, Yulia Malinovsky or Simcha Rothman, who put in hours upon hours of excellent parliamentary work, how hard it is to get screen time day to day. For Winter it comes easily. The spirit of the times. With such a tailwind, with compliments on the street, hugs at rallies and cameras following his every move, Winter feels he's riding the wave. But the distance between public euphoria and the moment the citizen stands alone behind the voting screen can be especially cruel. According to most polls, Winter is in real danger of being left out. @@@@@@ If Winter does not pass the threshold, one can already point to several significant mistakes he made along the way. The first of them is perhaps also the biggest: he gave up a political opportunity that is almost impossible to get. If Winter wanted to be a significant political player in the coming term, he had the option to do so on terms that were probably never offered to anyone in his position. Netanyahu doesn't hate him. He didn't reject him because of personal grudges. On the contrary, Winter is highly regarded among right-wingers, including within Likud. Moreover, an almost perfect political symbiosis could have formed here - not many know this, but Nadav Strauchler, Winter's campaign strategist (and relative), was in the past part of Likud's campaign team. Strauchler was one of the people closest to Netanyahu's inner circle, so close that he was even the witness at the wedding of Yonatan Urich, Likud's campaign manager. These are not two foreign camps that never exchanged a word. On the contrary. The acquaintance is deep, the ties are personal, and the doors were open. Winter received an offer that Ayelet Shaked and Naftali Bennett, throughout their years in Yamina, in New Right and in their other political incarnations, could only dream of: two spots on the Likud list and two spots on Smotrich's list. Four Knesset members identified with Winter, with the option to later operate as an independent political force, subject to arrangements that would allow it. To understand how exceptional this offer is, one needs to recall what happened just recently in the Likud primaries. A battle of titans over every spot. The clashes around Tally Gotliv, the struggles between Gila Gamliel and Israel Katz, the internal wars, the alliances, the deals, the smears. Every spot on the list was worth a world war. And Winter? He received an offer for two spots in Likud, without going through primaries, and another two spots with Smotrich. Four Knesset members. Political power. Influence. A foothold in the next Knesset. And all this without gambling on the threshold. Crazy. Winter rejected the offer. And this is exactly where the truly interesting question begins. Not whether Winter will pass the threshold, but why a man who was handed the option of getting significant political power chose to bet everything. It may be that Winter's "drive" is no longer just to establish an independent, strong faction in the Knesset. There is something more personal here. For the past year and a half they've been pumping into him that he is the new messiah of the right. The man everyone is waiting for. The man who will bring good tidings. The man who will save the camp. At every rally they applauded him, in every interview they complimented him, at every meeting they explained to him that the public is waiting only for him. It may be that it "went to his head". Winter may have fallen in love with the euphoria more than with the opportunity to actually have influence. Because it's one thing to be just another Knesset member on the Likud list, even with significant political power behind you, and quite another to be the Ofer Winter of these days. The man at center stage, whom the whole political system is busy with, whose every interview generates a headline, whose every poll makes campaign managers open their calculators. There is something addictive about this status. When everyone talks about you, it's easy to believe that everyone will also vote for you. When everyone says you are the new hope, it's hard to agree to be just part of something existing. When you already see yourself at the head of a camp, four Knesset members can suddenly look like a consolation prize. (Weekend column, Walla)
