יו״ר מפלגת ישראל ביתנו, ח״כ אביגדור ליברמן: ״מכל האתגרים והאיומים שמדינת ישראל תידרש להתמודד איתם בשנים הקרובות, האתגר המדיני הוא החשוב והדרמטי ביותר. מעמדה של ישראל בעולם הגיע לשפל חסר תקדים! במשך שנים נהנתה ישראל מווטו אמריקאי במועצת הביטחון של האו״ם. אני מאמין שכל עוד טראמפ מכהן כנשיא, זכות הווטו תמשיך לעמוד לרשותנו. אצל הנשיא הבא, רפובליקני או דמוקרטי, המציאות עלולה להשתנות. העברת החלטה נגד ישראל במועצת הביטחון מכוח פרק 7 למגילת האו״ם, המטיל סנקציות בינלאומיות מחייבות, עלולה להביא לבידוד עמוק ולהפיכת ישראל למדינה מצורעת. האיום נובע בראש ובראשונה מאובדן התמיכה בישראל בקרב הציבור האמריקאי, והלכי הרוח בציבור משפיעים ומחלחלים למערכת הפוליטית. אבל באירופה מצבנו חמור אף יותר. בריטניה כבר הודיעה על מגבלות חדשות על פעילות הקשורה למפעל ההתיישבות ביו״ש, ובהן איסור יבוא ואפשרות להטלת סנקציות על חברות ואנשים המממנים, מסייעים או מרוויחים מפעילות באזור. הסנקציות עלולות להשפיע גם על בנקים ישראליים המעניקים משכנתאות במעלה אדומים ובאריאל. סנקציות בריטיות על בנקים ישראליים הן חלום בלהות שאסור שיתממש. הרמתי טלפונים לידידים ותיקים במשרדי החוץ והאוצר הבריטיים ושאלתי: האם מישהו בממשלת ישראל מוטרד מהמצב ומטפל בו? התשובה: אף אחד. מה הפלא? כבר שנה אין לישראל שגריר בלונדון בגלל האינטריגות בלשכת ראש הממשלה. אבל זה מתגמד מול הסנקציות מצד האיחוד האירופי, שהוצאתן אל הפועל נדחתה עד לאחר הבחירות בישראל. האיחוד הוא שותף הסחר העיקרי של ישראל, כשארצות הברית במקום השני. סנקציות על הסחר בין ישראל לאיחוד עלולות להביא לקריסה כלכלית של ממש. גם בבריסל שאלתי אם מישהו מטעם ישראל מטפל בנושא ופועל מול מקבלי ההחלטות. התשובה שקיבלתי: אף אחד לא מטפל ושום דבר לא נעשה. כשמחברים את הנקודות מתקבלת תמונה עגומה: אובדן התמיכה בציבור האמריקאי, שינוי אפשרי ביחס הממשל הבא, החלטות נגד ישראל במועצת הביטחון וסנקציות מצד בריטניה והאיחוד האירופי, כולם חלק משחיקה במעמדה הבינלאומי של ישראל, שהיא בעלת השלכות מדיניות, ביטחוניות וכלכליות. דוגמה מוחשית לכך ראינו בביקור נתניהו בעצרת האו״ם בניו יורק. האיש, ויחד איתו ישראל, הפך למצורע ולנטל על העולם המערבי. טראמפ נפגש עם נשיא טורקיה, ראשי מדינות במזרח התיכון ומנהיגים רבים, בהם זלנסקי, אך מבין שנתניהו הוא נטל. גם ראשי תעשיית ההיי-טק האמריקאית ומנהיגי מדינות ה- G7 אינם מוכנים להיפגש איתו. את עומק האיוולת של נתניהו, סמוטריץ׳ ושאר השותפים לממשלת טבח 7 באוקטובר אפשר לראות בכך ששגריר ארה״ב בישראל, מייק האקבי, איש האגף הימני במפלגה הרפובליקנית וידיד אמת של ישראל, נאלץ לבקר בקוסרא ולתמוך בפלסטינים״.

Trump met with the president of Turkey, heads of state in the Middle East and many leaders, including Zelensky, but understands that Netanyahu is a burden. The heads of the American high-tech industry and the leaders of the G7 countries are also unwilling to meet with him. When Rabin defeated Shamir in 1992 by a single-seat margin, the consequences were momentous. When Netanyahu edged out Peres in 1996 by a razor-thin percentage, the country changed course. But if the trend in the polls intensifies and the ‘change bloc’ moves further away from 61 seats, the only option will be to form a shaky government while breaking a substantial bundle of core campaign promises. A decisive outcome is achieved when a determined bloc wins a majority and coalesces into a stable camp for years. When an eclectic collection of parties joins together for a single vote in the Knesset, that isn’t called a decisive outcome—perhaps a temporary political maneuver. Anyone who doubts this is invited to recall the adventure of the ‘change government’: how it began and how it ended. The significant development following the closing of the candidate lists, therefore, is the merger of Chili Tropper’s party into Eisenkot’s list. It was an intra-bloc contest between Yashar! and Beyachad, but with significant implications for the day after the election. After all, members of ‘Bayit Tzioni’ had previously pledged that they would not support a minority government, even if it were sworn in thanks to the abstention of the Arab parties. Eisenkot’s plan is somewhat reminiscent of what Jewish law calls the prohibition on ‘instructing a non-Jew’ to perform forbidden labor. You’re at a hotel in Rome on Shabbat, dying from the heat, and there’s an Italian next to you. You’re forbidden to tell him, ‘Turn on the air conditioner,’ because that would violate Shabbat. But you can say, ‘It’s hot as hell in here,’ hoping he’ll get the message on his own. Any reasonable person can see what his history means for the chances of forming such a government, as well as the fact that he is being joined by Elisaf Peretz and Shira Shapira, a bereaved brother and a bereaved mother whose loved ones were murdered by the organization that none of the Arab MKs are willing to call by the obvious term: ‘terrorist organization.’ It appears that common ground was reached on the basis of a twofold understanding. A decision is reached when a determined bloc wins a majority and coalesces into a stable camp for years. When an eclectic collection of parties joins together for one vote in the Knesset, that's not called a decision – maybe a temporary scheme. Whoever doesn't believe it is invited to recall the adventure of the change government, how it began and how it ended. The significant development with the closing of the slates, therefore, is the merger of Hili Tropper's party into Eisenkot's slate. This was an intra-bloc tender between Yashar! and Together, but with significant consequences for the day after the elections. The members of "Zionist Home," after all, committed in the past that they would not lend a hand to a minority government, even one sworn in with the abstention of the Arab parties. Eisenkot's outline is somewhat reminiscent of what is called in halacha "the prohibition of telling a gentile." You're in a hotel in Rome on Shabbat, dying of heat, and next to you is an Italian. You're not allowed to tell him "turn on the air conditioner" because that's desecrating Shabbat. You can say: "It's hot as hell in here," in the hope he'll understand on his own. That's roughly the Eisenkot outline: we won't negotiate with Abbas and Tibi and demand "vote for us," we'll just say "if Bibi doesn't fall, it's on you." But the logic behind it is to give voters hope for an upheaval, which will allow them to bridge difficult weeks in the polls, and the past week certainly was one. The merger talks focused on this gap between the two. After all, Tropper himself was one of those who thwarted the formation of a similar government headed by Gantz in 2020. It's clear to any sensible person what that means for the chances of forming such a government given his history, as well as the fact that with him come Elisaf Peretz and Shira Shapira, a bereaved mother and bereaved brother of people murdered by the organization that none of the Arab MKs are willing to define by the obvious name "terrorist organization." It seems the space of agreement was reached through a double understanding: one, Eisenkot will make almost every effort to broaden the government. Not Netanyahu first, but maybe second. Not Likud, then maybe Winter, or Smotrich. Anything that will allow broadening the government's base. And if not, the intention will be to swear in a minority government, but not as a long-term project – rather for a short time, either until the coalition is broadened or until elections. The main problem with the scenario is the partners. Liberman and Bennett have already made clear they'll refuse to join such a move. True, they already did it in 2021 and then formed a coalition with Ra'am. But this time there is also a political interest. Why would Liberman agree to take all the fire for breaking promises in order to crown, at his not-young age, Eisenkot, who is relatively a newcomer? Same for Bennett. The reluctance will grow especially if it's clear this is a temporary move for the purpose of separating Netanyahu from the title "prime minister." Beyond the debate over whether the damage from such an alliance won't hand Netanyahu the next elections, will they let Eisenkot run a campaign from the Prime Minister's Office and drink their blood? As is known, Tropper donated a kidney; they don't intend to donate their bodies to science. The lesson of the Bennett affair and the six seats has not been fully internalized. He became prime minister not because of poker skills – which he certainly has – but as payment for breaking the promise. His other partners were committed to replacing Netanyahu, and he wasn't.
