**The Defeat of the Change Bloc and the Surge in Arab Voter Turnout Increase the Chances of a Different Kind of Politics** Last night’s exit polls sent one clear message: Netanyahu lost, but it was unclear who had won on the other side. Here is an update as the actual results come in: Netanyahu has not yet won, but the Change Bloc has been defeated. I have been covering politics since the beginning of the century. Never have I seen a political camp prepare for elections so impeccably, so systematically, and with such energy as the Change Bloc. Exemplary vote-sharing agreements, an unprecedented operation to fly voters in from abroad. And yet, according to the actual vote count, it ended up with roughly the same number of seats as in the previous election. Demographics defeated energy, and the messaging also proved problematic and unsuccessful. The public was not convinced that the war had been a complete victory, but it also refused to accept the claim that it had been a complete failure. Voters were repulsed by ultra-Orthodox draft evasion, but they did not believe the solution was a minority government dependent on draft refusers and anti-Zionists. They were disgusted by the chanting of “We Do Not Believe in the Rule of the Zionists,” but they were equally shocked by the singing of “Biladi, Biladi” at the Joint List’s headquarters yesterday. Netanyahu’s position changed dramatically between the closing of the exit polls and the emergence of the actual results. Last night, it seemed certain that the Speaker of the Knesset would be removed and that, one way or another, a minority government headed by Eisenkot would be formed. Now, according to the criteria Eisenkot himself established, he has lost the legitimacy to form such a government. They would need the active support of the Joint List to establish it, and that seems both futile and pointless. There is simply no chance that, in post-October 7 Israel, a coalition could survive for long with six immediate family members of people murdered by Hamas sitting alongside Knesset members who explain that Hamas is actually a charitable organization. And so, much like Moshe Dayan once said to the Arabs, Netanyahu effectively told the Change Bloc in the early hours of the morning: “Here is my phone number. You are welcome to call.” Lieberman, Bennett, and Eisenkot now face a dilemma from hell: head into another election, this time without the thousands of Israelis abroad rushing home to vote; attempt to join Netanyahu’s bloc under difficult conditions and in violation of their campaign promises; or go begging to Ra’am and the Joint List, both intoxicated by victory. And one final observation: Throughout the entire election campaign, we searched for the third bloc — the unity bloc. There were Gantz and Erdan, Winter and Zelekha, Tropper, and who even remembers who else. They all collapsed, evaporated, or disappeared. And now, it turns out that perhaps the real unity bloc was the Arab parties all along. Their extraordinary and historic voter turnout, at levels that will require thorough examination, shattered both sides’ dreams of reaching 61 seats. It reminded Jews on both sides of the political divide that perhaps, after years of division, they will have to learn to sit together after all.

Liberman, Bennett and Eisenkot now face a dilemma from hell: go to another election to which Israelis from abroad will no longer flock, try to join the Netanyahu bloc on harsh terms and against campaign pledges, or beg Ra'am and the victory-drunk Joint List.

Translation It doesn't matter whether you're Erdan-Edelstein people or Tropper-Hendel people (or Winter too, who in the end declared I'm with Netanyahu) - the very fact that 3 years after October 7 there's no room here for a party that simply runs under the banner of a "unity government" is sad. The "either them or us" argument continues to rule here 100%. And that's quite a bummer.

  9. Yaki AdamkerKan News

Translation Why is Yuli Edelstein still holding on to Likud's seat if he no longer believes in the party's path? That was true before the failure of his party with Erdan and is also true after their withdrawal from the race. Do the honorable thing and resign from the Knesset.

Translation Ashkelon. All of Ashkelon. To pass the electoral threshold, the entire city of Ashkelon has to vote for you. Do you understand how hard the task of passing the threshold is? Some don't. ___ This coming Tuesday, at ten at night, the Knesset lists will be locked. Until then we can expect a crazy political race mergers, withdrawals, reserved slots, last-minute offers, late-night phone calls, and people who until yesterday swore they would never sit together suddenly discovering they have much more in common. All this madness has one reason. One enemy. One terror hovering over everyone: The electoral threshold. Anyone who understands a little about politics knows there is nothing scarier. You can survive a bad campaign, a slip of the tongue, a bad poll and even the loss of a few seats. You cannot survive the threshold. The guillotine of Israeli politics: 3.25% and up, you're in the Knesset, with four seats, a budget, power and influence. A tenth of a percent less – and you're wiped out. Your votes are thrown in the trash and sometimes change the outcome of the entire election. No one is immune. Ask Benny Gantz. The man who once touched 38 seats in the polls, was chief of staff, defense minister, alternate prime minister and a real candidate for prime minister, found himself within a few short years looking up at the threshold from below. Yair Lapid too, who in the last term led an opposition party with 24 seats, knew in hard times how fast a party can be sucked down, until the merger with Naftali Bennett and the renewed stabilization pushed the danger away. And Bezalel Smotrich too, who from his point of view can present a phenomenal term with dramatic achievements for settlement and for the right, could not look down at this monster with confidence. The threshold does not operate according to normal political logic. It works on momentum. On buzz. On capricious media. On the sense of who is rising and who is falling. A party can be at four seats in the morning, get three days of negative headlines and start slipping. The moment the label "not passing" sticks to it, a particularly cruel mechanism kicks in: voters are afraid to waste their vote, abandon it for a safer party, the polls drop a bit more and the prophecy fulfills itself. It's a whirlpool. And once you're in it, it's very hard to get out. @@@@@@@@@@ The numbers make the terror of the threshold even more tangible. In the 2022 election there were 4,764,742 valid votes in Israel. The threshold, 3.25%, stood at 154,855 votes. Meretz received 150,793. In other words, only 4,062 people separated it from the Knesset. Four thousand votes in a country of millions of voters, and that was the difference between four seats and zero. Estimates are that in the upcoming election, passing the threshold will require reaching about 165–170 thousand votes. Just to put it in perspective, the entire city of Ashkelon has 176 thousand residents. The last week before the lists close is not really a week of ideology. It is a week of survival. Never before have so many candidates and parties been circling in the danger zone. In the latest polls Benny Gantz is deep below the bar; Chili Tropper and Yoaz Hendel are hovering around it; Smotrich and Feiglin and also Ofer Winter are teetering on the edge of the abyss. Some understood the magnitude of the task and gave up, like Ayelet Shaked and Gilad Erdan. Few will manage to escape the monster on their own. Most will have to choose: merge, withdraw – or be swallowed. Tropper, for example, is expected to look for the merger that will give him firmer ground. Others may realize at the last moment that they have no real way to reach 170 thousand voters and prefer an honorable withdrawal over crashing at the ballot box. There will also be those who insist on running to the end, convinced the polls are wrong and the public is waiting for them. On Tuesday at ten at night the door will close. Until then everyone will be running in the corridor. And behind them, drawing ever closer, the terror of the electoral threshold. (Weekend column, Walla)

Translation Tonight we reported * Bennett and Eisenkot met on Saturday night. A merger between them is still on the table, but Eisenkot's circle has reservations in light of the enormous damage the merger with Lapid caused Bennett. • After Erdan's withdrawal, Blue and White is expected to try to bring in individual players such as Edelstein, Bloch and others. Shaked is also being courted by them. If Tropper joins Eisenkot, Hendel may also still make a merger. • By all estimates Moshe Kahlon will not join in this round, despite the offer of a reserved slot in Likud and elsewhere.

Translation A Shabbat riddle: What will Chili Tropper do? After Erdan's withdrawal, Chili Tropper's dilemma is sharpening Option one - try to run independently and hope Erdan's votes come back. Option two - Eisenkot. If Chili and the rest of his party's members go for this move, they will have to explain to the public how they promised the broadest possible government but are now going to Eisenkot, who does not rule out swearing in a minority government with the Haredi factions as "free agents" that each side fights over, given that there is no 61. Option three - Bennett. Tropper has appreciation for Bennett (I remember from the change government that he always spoke well of him), but it seems Eisenkot can offer a bit more in the current situation, by virtue of being the big party leading the bloc. What will Tropper choose? It'll be interesting

  13. Yaron Avraham & Yanir Cozin

Translation After the withdrawal of Gilad Erdan and Yuli Edelstein, we need to rethink this concept of a party, usually a small one, that announces in advance that it will force unity after the election. There is a logical flaw here that the heads of these parties fail to make up for: if the big parties want to form a unity government after the election, they don't need these parties to "force" unity on them, because once they have decided on unity, each is likely to bring more parties from its own bloc, and that is how the government will be formed, and then there is no real need for a "third-bloc party." There are a few more like that on the field for now, and it's worth recalculating the route. Shabbat shalom.

Translation Eisenkot: We welcome the decision of Gilad Erdan and Yuli Edelstein. ‏This is a responsible, leadership decision that will increase the chances of replacing the October 7 government and forming a broad Zionist government that will bring healing and recovery to the people of Israel. ‏Every party on the edge of the electoral threshold should act with the same responsibility and put the good of Israel before any other consideration.

Translation Erdan announced his withdrawal from the race. Chairman of the Unity party, Gilad Erdan: Unfortunately, after about a month of campaigning, reality shows that in the upcoming election a large majority of the public wants above all a clear decision on the question of who will be prime minister, and the need for a broad unity government is not high on citizens' list of priorities. Despite the many efforts we made, the support so far for the "Unity" party I founded does not ensure with high probability that it will pass the electoral threshold, and the options of merging with other parties in the unity bloc are not materializing either. Therefore I have decided that the "Unity" party will not run in the upcoming election. Leadership also means recognizing reality as it is and acting responsibly, and I believe we must make sure that our voters' votes affect the outcome of the election and do not go to waste. I thank everyone who believed in the path of unity, volunteered, supported and helped, and especially my colleagues in the party leadership - Yuli Edelstein, Aliza Bloch, Oren Smadja and Hezi Nehama - for the partnership, the work and the belief in the path. It was my honor to lead this wonderful group.

Gilad Erdan, chairman of the Unity Party: “Throughout my life, I have served the people of Israel and the State of Israel. It was out of this sense of mission that, several weeks ago, I founded the ‘Unity’ Party, because I believe Israel needs a broad Zionist government capable of passing a genuine military conscription law and resolving disputes. I believed that the horrific massacre of October 7 and the terrible price paid by Israel’s citizens require us to change course. Unfortunately, after about a month of campaigning, the reality is that in the upcoming elections, a large majority of the public is seeking, above all, a clear decision on the question of who will serve as prime minister, while the need for a broad unity government does not rank high among voters’ priorities. Despite the extensive efforts we have made, support thus far for the ‘Unity’ Party that I founded does not provide a high likelihood of crossing the electoral threshold, and efforts to join forces with other parties in the unity bloc have also failed to materialize. I have therefore decided that the ‘Unity’ Party will not run in the upcoming elections. Leadership also means recognizing reality as it is and acting responsibly.
