Translation This week I traveled with Jessica, the partner of the hero Ben Shimoni, to the Gaza border area. On October 7, exactly three years later, we drove the last route of the late Ben, who saved many partygoers from the Nova party. Ben drove his car again and again onto roads swarming with terrorists to rescue partygoers, most of whom he didn't know at all. While on the phone with Jessica and near the entrance to Alumim, Ben ran into a terrorist ambush and was murdered. We stopped at the exact spot where he was hit, as Jessica reconstructed the last moments. Ben tells his partner that there are terrorists in front of him and then only gunfire is heard. Ben is gone. Many others are alive thanks to him. Watch: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DeUlhc-NU17/?vrfl=c3pzbHZyc3I1MXps https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19q3sAkvif/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Translation Everyone who served under Maj. Gen. (res.) Avi Gil knows that his hallmark is giving full backing to the commanders and soldiers under him.

Translation Hili Tropper writes: Leaders need to be where it hurts. Not where it's comfortable. Not only behind fences and bodyguards, not only with those who support them, and not only in front of a camera that edits the clips. They need to come to the place where the pain is. To sit with Israelis at a distance where you can see the color of their eyes. And the tears too. At a distance where you can almost hear the heartbeat. The broken heart. The country was filled this week with many hundreds of memorial services. A heavy cloud of grief seemed to settle today over the Gaza border communities. Along Route 232 countless families stood at the memorial corners they set up in memory of their loved ones. In the kibbutzim and communities, gatherings were held. This is the place where leaders need to be. It's doubtful whether members of the government came to the Gaza border area at all today. The members of the government on whose watch the terrible massacre occurred. Many of them didn't refer to this day at all on social media. It's astonishing to see politicians who write a lot and comment even on trivialities choosing not to write a word on a day of mourning. An entire nation is in pain, and most members of the government didn't come at all to the eye of the storm of pain. To the region that was filled, exactly three years ago, with blood. Leaders come to where it hurts most, even if it will be hard and even if they encounter anger. Simply because that's where you need to be. Close to the broken heart.

Hili Tropper, straight: The Supreme Court showed Abu Shehadeh the way out of the Knesset candidate list, and rightly so. This has nothing to do with Netanyahu, but rather with a values-based position shared across nearly the entire Israeli political spectrum. Nevertheless, there is a group in society that insists on viewing every position or move in the political arena through a single lens: Netanyahu. For them, the fact that we supported disqualifying Sami Abu Shehadeh from running for the Knesset, after he expressed support for the October 7 massacre, means that “we are dancing to Netanyahu’s tune.” As if it were impossible that we simply believe that someone who, after the massacre, incites our enemies to continue—“If little Gaza managed to do it, others can do it more simply and effectively”—should not be allowed to serve in Israel’s Knesset. What difference does Netanyahu’s position on the matter make? Isn’t it morally clear enough that such a person should not sit in Israel’s Knesset? The same applies when we say that only those who support eliminating Hamas can serve in the next government. It is immediately claimed that this is “surrendering to Netanyahu’s campaign.” But the world can also be viewed differently. For example, through the eyes of residents of Kfar Aza, Be’eri, and Sderot, whom we promised after October 7 that we would fight Hamas relentlessly. Or through the eyes of the soldiers who fell, and those we are still sending into battle. Does it make sense for people who do not support eliminating Hamas to sit in a government that sends soldiers into battle and makes decisions about the war against Hamas? The same applies to our opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state. We must not risk a similar outcome, God forbid, in Judea and Samaria as well. People can disagree with our positions. But the attempt to explain them through Netanyahu misses the point.

Translation Hili Tropper, Yashar: The Supreme Court showed Abu Shehadeh the way out of a Knesset list, and it's good that it did. As if it's not possible that we simply think that a person who after the massacre incites our enemies to continue - "If little Gaza managed to do this, others can do it more simply and efficiently" - must not serve in the Knesset of Israel.

Translation Chili Tropper writes: This is a tweet by Netanyahu on the night between October 28 and 29, 2023, three weeks after the massacre. Tonight, exactly three years ago, Netanyahu wrote "I was wrong" about having attacked the heads of the security establishment because, he claimed, they did not warn him of the approaching disaster. Today, he went back to attacking them. It turns out that with Netanyahu, a mistake always repeats itself, even on the same date in the calendar.

Translation First report on the newscast | It's a surprising name, known in every home in Israel - and it was in Gadi Eisenkot's sights until the last moments before the slates were submitted, as we report this evening for the first time, in a move that included conversations and consultations in very small forums - and that name is none other than former IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari. Hagari made a principled decision not to join politics; until the last moment Eisenkot and Hagari nonetheless discussed the possibility of Hagari being placed on the Yashar Knesset slate, against the background of the close relationship between them. Hagari, we can report, was supposed to be the ace Eisenkot pulls out (I remind you he promised "surprises," this was the surprise). But in the end - literally hours before the slates were submitted - the decision made was not to go for it; we'll explain why in a moment, but first briefly about the relationship between the two: Hagari served as Eisenkot's personal aide when he was chief of staff for two years. Eisenkot was the one who appointed him commander of Shayetet 13 even though Hagari did not grow up in the unit's classic command track; there was a very close personal relationship there, including a heartbreaking eulogy by Hagari as IDF spokesperson in an official statement when Eisenkot's son, Gal, fell in battle in the Strip. Eisenkot conducted a poll in which he saw that there are 2 figures who actually bring seats, both to the slate and to the bloc: one is Daniel Hagari and the other is Chili Tropper. Tropper he eventually placed on the slate with his people: Eliasaf Peretz, Shira Shapira - in a move whose political effect remains to be seen and which carries (at least on its face) a certain risk if and when Eisenkot wants to form a minority government. As for Hagari - despite the clear and unequivocal polls - the final decision, made mainly by him - despite Eisenkot's courting - was not to join the slate - both for personal reasons and out of a desire to continue in private business. And so, hours before submitting the slate - Eisenkot had to shelve the announcement, while another announcement had already been carried out - the move to bring in Tropper. Bottom line - one clear poll showing that Hagari brings seats to the bloc and the slate did not ripen into a move. Another clear poll - about Tropper - did ripen. That's what happened behind the scenes in the last moments before the slates were submitted. Translation The change bloc is organized. As organized as it can be. Tropper is in, four parties - an even number with surplus-vote agreements without leaving votes on the floor, and all the efforts to get Gantz off the track have already been made, including offers of positions. Outwardly they manage to produce an almost idyllic picture of unity. Even Yair Golan has been silent for three weeks, or at least trying not to plant left-side IEDs in the path of his friends from the right-center. No public attacks, no mutual smears, everyone projects good relations and mutual respect. There's even already a joint WhatsApp group for the campaign chiefs, for coordination as needed. But behind the scenes the picture is a little different, mainly between two - Yair Lapid and Gadi Eisenkot. Outwardly, there is respect, restraint and avoidance of harsh criticism. Everyone understands that fights within the bloc drive voters away. But behind the scenes Lapid and Eisenkot carry quite a lot of resentment toward each other. The story between them begins back in 2022. Then serious negotiations took place between the two, and Eisenkot was close to joining Yesh Atid. There was talk of the second spot on the slate and spots 7 and 25 for his people. The two even shook hands. But at the last moment Eisenkot chose to go with Benny Gantz. Eisenkot himself later explained that Lapid's offer was more generous, but that he estimated Gantz had a better chance of forming a government and therefore chose to go with him and took third place after Gideon Sa'ar. Lapid is a politician who attributes great significance to one's word, to friendship and to trust. We also saw this in the way he managed to keep his people together when political reality required them to swallow hard decisions without rebellions and without tricks. The story with Eisenkot, and especially the handshake that ultimately didn't materialize into a political agreement, he has not forgotten. Beyond the residue of the past, there is also the present. In the past week a wave of reports, articles and above all commentaries suddenly popped up calling on Yair Lapid to drop out. An article in Haaretz, some chatter by Ben Caspit on the matter, and other commentators and opinion leaders who raised the same possibility. Is it coincidental? Did everyone wake up the same week with the same thought? Or is someone in the political system making sure this idea circulates out there? In Yesh Atid, at least, there are those who suspect it is not a coincidence. The accusing finger is pointed toward Eisenkot and his circle. And this is no longer a story about past resentments, about honor or ego. It's a much more significant political story. @@@@@@@@@@@ After the slates closed, and in the time remaining until the election, the parties' main effort will of course be directed at moving voters between the two blocs. But beneath the surface another battle will be waged, no less fierce: cannibalizing votes within the blocs themselves. Eisenkot will try to take voters from Bennett and Lapid. Bennett and Lapid will try to take them back from Eisenkot. According to various checks and polls, a very significant part of past Yesh Atid voters have now moved to Eisenkot — in some checks at least 40 percent. Lapid doesn't intend to give up on them. As far as he's concerned, they're not lost voters but votes that need to be brought back home. And this is important far beyond the question of Yesh Atid's number of seats. Because if the change bloc wins, the big question of the day after will be who within it can demand the premiership. There is a dramatic difference between an outcome in which Eisenkot arrives with 24 seats and Bennett and Lapid with 15 each, and an outcome in which Eisenkot gets 20 and Bennett and Lapid approach him with 18. In the first scenario, Eisenkot is almost the landlord. In the second, everything is open. Suddenly one can talk about rotation. Suddenly Bennett and Liberman can put a different argument on the table: we have experience as prime minister and as senior ministers, together we hold many more seats, we will lead the government — and Eisenkot will get the defense portfolio. And these are only two out of countless possible scenarios. Therefore the battle within the change bloc is only beginning. Outwardly they will compliment each other and take care not to break the dishes. Inside they will fight over every seat, because every seat that moves from Lapid to Eisenkot, from Eisenkot to Bennett or from Bennett to Lapid doesn't necessarily change the size of the bloc, but it can completely change the balance of power within it. And in this election, the dramatic question may not be only which bloc won. But who won within the bloc that won. (Weekend column, Walla)

“‘These are the most consequential elections in the country’s history,’ shout the street signs, internet banners, radio interviewees, and TV presenters. I have just one question: How can elections be decisive if, according to all the polls, they won’t produce a decision? When Rabin defeated Shamir in 1992 by a single-seat margin, the consequences were momentous. When Netanyahu edged out Peres in 1996 by a razor-thin percentage, the country changed course. But if the trend in the polls intensifies and the ‘change bloc’ moves further away from 61 seats, the only option will be to form a shaky government while breaking a substantial bundle of core campaign promises. A decisive outcome is achieved when a determined bloc wins a majority and coalesces into a stable camp for years. When an eclectic collection of parties joins together for a single vote in the Knesset, that isn’t called a decisive outcome—perhaps a temporary political maneuver. Anyone who doubts this is invited to recall the adventure of the ‘change government’: how it began and how it ended. The significant development following the closing of the candidate lists, therefore, is the merger of Chili Tropper’s party into Eisenkot’s list. It was an intra-bloc contest between Yashar! and Beyachad, but with significant implications for the day after the election. After all, members of ‘Bayit Tzioni’ had previously pledged that they would not support a minority government, even if it were sworn in thanks to the abstention of the Arab parties. Eisenkot’s plan is somewhat reminiscent of what Jewish law calls the prohibition on ‘instructing a non-Jew’ to perform forbidden labor. You’re at a hotel in Rome on Shabbat, dying from the heat, and there’s an Italian next to you. You’re forbidden to tell him, ‘Turn on the air conditioner,’ because that would violate Shabbat. But you can say, ‘It’s hot as hell in here,’ hoping he’ll get the message on his own. That, broadly speaking, is the Eisenkot plan: We won’t negotiate with Abbas and Tibi and demand, ‘Vote for us’; we’ll just say, ‘If Bibi doesn’t fall, it’s on you.’ Only after the election will we know whether publicly laying out the plan on this issue was courageous or foolish. But the logic behind it is to give voters hope for an upset, allowing them to weather difficult weeks in the polls—and the past week was certainly one of those. The merger talks focused on this gap between the two sides. Tropper himself, after all, was among those who thwarted the formation of a similar government headed by Gantz in 2020. Any reasonable person can see what his history means for the chances of forming such a government, as well as the fact that he is being joined by Elisaf Peretz and Shira Shapira, a bereaved brother and a bereaved mother whose loved ones were murdered by the organization that none of the Arab MKs are willing to call by the obvious term: ‘terrorist organization.’ It appears that common ground was reached on the basis of a twofold understanding. First, Eisenkot will make almost every effort to broaden the government. Netanyahu would not be the first choice, but perhaps the second. If not Likud, then perhaps Winter or Smotrich. Anything that would make it possible to broaden the government’s base. And if that fails, the intention would be to swear in a minority government, but not as a long-term project—rather, for a short period, either until the coalition is expanded or until another election. The public justification would be that if the country is going back to the polls anyway, then the only question is whether that happens under a Netanyahu minority government or an Eisenkot minority government. The main problem with this scenario is the prospective partners. Lieberman and Bennett have already made clear that they would refuse to join such a move. True, they said the same sort of thing in 2021 and then formed a coalition with Ra’am. But this time there is also a political self-interest involved. > >

Translation These are the most fateful elections in the history of the state," shout the street signs, the online banners, the radio interviewees, the TV presenters. I just have a question: how can elections be decisive if, according to all the polls, no decision will be reached in them? When Rabin beat Shamir in 1992 by the edge of one seat, the consequences were fateful. When Netanyahu beat Peres in 1996 by a razor's edge of one percent, the country changed course. But if the trend in the polls intensifies, and the change bloc moves further away from 61, the choice will be forming a shaky government while breaking a fine bundle of core election promises. A decision is reached when a determined bloc wins a majority and coalesces into a stable camp for years. When an eclectic collection of parties joins together for one vote in the Knesset, that's not called a decision – maybe a temporary scheme. Whoever doesn't believe it is invited to recall the adventure of the change government, how it began and how it ended. The significant development with the closing of the slates, therefore, is the merger of Hili Tropper's party into Eisenkot's slate. This was an intra-bloc tender between Yashar! and Together, but with significant consequences for the day after the elections. The members of "Zionist Home," after all, committed in the past that they would not lend a hand to a minority government, even one sworn in with the abstention of the Arab parties. Eisenkot's outline is somewhat reminiscent of what is called in halacha "the prohibition of telling a gentile." You're in a hotel in Rome on Shabbat, dying of heat, and next to you is an Italian. You're not allowed to tell him "turn on the air conditioner" because that's desecrating Shabbat. You can say: "It's hot as hell in here," in the hope he'll understand on his own. That's roughly the Eisenkot outline: we won't negotiate with Abbas and Tibi and demand "vote for us," we'll just say "if Bibi doesn't fall, it's on you." Only after the elections will we know whether laying out the plan publicly on this issue was courage or stupidity. But the logic behind it is to give voters hope for an upheaval, which will allow them to bridge difficult weeks in the polls, and the past week certainly was one. The merger talks focused on this gap between the two. After all, Tropper himself was one of those who thwarted the formation of a similar government headed by Gantz in 2020. It seems the space of agreement was reached through a double understanding: one, Eisenkot will make almost every effort to broaden the government. Not Netanyahu first, but maybe second. Not Likud, then maybe Winter, or Smotrich. Anything that will allow broadening the government's base. And if not, the intention will be to swear in a minority government, but not as a long-term project – rather for a short time, either until the coalition is broadened or until elections. The public justification will be that if we're going to the polls again anyway, then the whole question is whether it's under a Netanyahu minority government or an Eisenkot one. The main problem with the scenario is the partners. Liberman and Bennett have already made clear they'll refuse to join such a move. True, they already did it in 2021 and then formed a coalition with Ra'am. But this time there is also a political interest. Why would Liberman agree to take all the fire for breaking promises in order to crown, at his not-young age, Eisenkot, who is relatively a newcomer? Same for Bennett. The reluctance will grow especially if it's clear this is a temporary move for the purpose of separating Netanyahu from the title "prime minister." Beyond the debate over whether the damage from such an alliance won't hand Netanyahu the next elections, will they let Eisenkot run a campaign from the Prime Minister's Office and drink their blood? As is known, Tropper donated a kidney; they don't intend to donate their bodies to science. The lesson of the Bennett affair and the six seats has not been fully internalized. He became prime minister not because of poker skills – which he certainly has – but as payment for breaking the promise. His other partners were committed to replacing Netanyahu, and he wasn't. This time it's Liberman, who declares he won't agree to form such a minority coalition. If there aren't 61 seats, will the Eisenkot outline, in the best case, form a Liberman government?
