Translation Since October 7 I have attended more than 500 funerals and shiva condolence visits. It changes you from the inside. You can't encounter so much pain, love and courage and remain the same person. You sit across from parents who lost their son. You listen to stories about the daughter who will not come back. And you take something with you from every home and every family. I want to share with you some personal insights from this painful journey: ** To tell our loved ones while they are still alive how much we love them. So many times I have heard from bereaved families about the burning sense of a missed chance: "If only I could tell him now how proud I am of him and how much I love him…". "If only I had one more chance to hug her". More than once I find myself leaving a funeral or a shiva visit and immediately calling my mother to ask how she is, or calling my wife Gilat and telling her that I love her, just like that in the middle of the day. Don't keep good words to yourself. ** I have learned that a young generation is growing up here like no other in the world. A typical 20-year-old American young woman has perhaps been to one funeral in her whole life, of some grandmother who passed away at a ripe old age. Israeli young people her age have sadly been to countless funerals in recent years. It breaks the heart. I look at the faces of the young soldiers when I talk with them at funerals and see on their faces the horrors of battle and the sadness over the loss of friends. As if they grew up all at once. But I also see in their eyes the determination, the burning belief that they have the power to repair. This generation is our hope. In the coming years more heroines and heroes will rise from among them, join the leadership of the country and rebuild Israel. ** Bereavement is not contagious. Many people shy away from getting close to bereaved families. Afraid to approach, to talk, to show interest. Many families say that because of the excessive caution of those around them, they are left alone with the pain. People don't know what to say. "As if we are fragile," someone told me, "or as if this bereavement is contagious". Bereavement is not contagious. What is contagious is the courage of these people to say yes to life after death. And their love for this country, which has stood the hardest test there is. So don't be afraid to approach. Ask simply, even if you don't know them: "Tell me about your son". Give a hug. You won't catch bereavement. You'll only catch life. ** "To be worthy of them" is not just a slogan. Bereaved families plead and demand of us, over the graves of their loved ones, to be more united. To stop the internal rift that weakens us so much. Sometimes on the drive back from such a funeral I turn on the car radio and immediately turn it off again. The gap between the families' will and the petty quarrels in politics and the media is simply unbearable. It is the responsibility of all of us to fix this. Mine too. ** In their deaths they commanded us to live When you read the chilling wills that soldiers left before going into battle, you see one request that repeats again and again: the request to family and friends not to sink into mourning but to make the effort to go on living. It is so sweeping that one can assume that even the fallen who did not write a farewell letter would have wanted to pass on exactly this message to all of us. The shortest will I have ever read is three words long. The late Sergeant Itay Amar wrote it before going into Gaza, in a note on his phone. He fell in battle in Gaza when he was only 19. When his family opened the note on his locked phone during the shiva, they discovered the words: "Stay happy for me". ** To all the members of the bereaved families, we swear to do everything to fulfill the will of your sons and daughters. To repair and to be worthy. This is our life's mission.
