We went back to the quotes from the protocols of that very same security discussion, revealed yesterday by our analyst Noam Amir, to see what the Shin Bet chief really said in it, and these are Ronen Bar's words: "We can be very generous and even enticing on humanitarian issues... Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able, in any known constellation, to go to an initiated round (of fighting)." But that's not the end of the story. The Haaretz article claimed that the Emirati warning about Sinwar's intention to start a war was passed to the Shin Bet, and from there to Netanyahu, on September 15. But the Shin Bet's official intelligence report of September 21, six days later, states: "In our understanding, this move (the renewal of the demonstrations at the fence) does not reflect a change in Hamas's strategy, and it is evident that even now it has no interest in deteriorating into a broad military confrontation." The facts speak for themselves.

This was one of my biggest criticisms of Netanyahu until now. I called this ignoring "the punching-bag-kid syndrome," and it invited continued and intensified pressure from countries that saw there was no price for it. Now – they will have to factor into the equation harm to their interests in the region too, and that has a chilling effect. I know for certain that closing the British consulate is a painful step that will reduce Britain's ability to influence the PA and Judea and Samaria. It's not only a symbolic step, it's real harm to British interests in the region. Expelling their representatives from the Gaza command headquarters in Kiryat Gat is also something they tried to prevent. It greatly reduces their ability to influence everything happening in Gaza. We could have done more. For example, recognize the Falkland Islands as occupied Argentine territory, issue a joint statement with Argentina and its other friends, impose sanctions on any company that helps plunder Argentina's natural resources (mainly oil). That's a semantic step that exposes their hypocrisy. Israel is the third-largest arms exporter in the European Union; vital systems could be hit in optics, interception and intelligence as well. Their ambassador in Tel Aviv could be expelled along with other diplomats. But on the whole I'm satisfied. There can always be more, and ammunition should be left for further steps too, as Foreign Minister Sa'ar has already said explicitly. I hope and expect there will be real economic damage to British businesses and companies through the enforcement of the anti-BDS laws in Texas and Florida. We're talking about many tens of billions. This is also very important to deter other countries. But the main point is the change in foreign policy and exacting a price. And in Israel we don't get confused for a second. Not the settlements, not Netanyahu and not anything we do is the problem. That's the excuse. If it weren't this they'd find something else. The reason has to do with politics, the Islamization of Europe and antisemitism that has been ingrained on the continent for thousands of years. The difference is that this time we won't go like sheep to the slaughter; we have a state and we will hit back.
