When this is the man who will represent the ruling party at the High Court and soon in the Knesset - it's already a problem for all of us. * One last thing: I told the students that we're all charismatic and persuasive on stage, but don't believe whoever wins the argument. Ask for a source. Look for backup afterwards. And in general, don't settle for following politicians - because we will never tell you where we ourselves fail. Follow media outlets. But ones that are capable of criticizing their own camp too. * This is exactly why the first law I dream of submitting in the Knesset is a national program for critical thinking. Not who is right - but how to check whether we're being fooled. And I'm not waiting for the elections: I drafted it in recent days in consultation with experts (right after the panel I sat on it with Idan Ring from the Internet Association, which does great work in the field). Critical thinking is democracy's bulletproof vest. And Likud? As you can see, it provides us with learning materials for free😉

The issue of splitting the Attorney General's roles was the bone of contention between Smotrich and Rothman and Justice Minister Yariv Levin. But Smotrich has been pushing for this fix since his role in the Movement for Governance and Democracy back in 2013. Alongside this law, the law that Minister Ayelet Shaked and after her Amir Ohana tried unsuccessfully to advance in the past will also return to the table - the law for the appointment of government legal advisers by the ministers. Among the clauses one will also find the override clause. The one meant to regulate the conditions under which a Knesset law can be struck down by the High Court, by what majority, and in which cases the last word will nevertheless remain with the Knesset rather than the Supreme Court. If in the stormy days of the protest against the reform the government was accused of not presenting its plans in the election that preceded the launch of the plan by Levin - Smotrich and Rothman are putting it on the table already at the campaign stage.

Everyone understands that fights within the bloc drive voters away. But behind the scenes Lapid and Eisenkot carry quite a lot of resentment toward each other. The story between them begins back in 2022. Then serious negotiations took place between the two, and Eisenkot was close to joining Yesh Atid. There was talk of the second spot on the slate and spots 7 and 25 for his people. The two even shook hands. But at the last moment Eisenkot chose to go with Benny Gantz. Eisenkot himself later explained that Lapid's offer was more generous, but that he estimated Gantz had a better chance of forming a government and therefore chose to go with him and took third place after Gideon Sa'ar. Lapid is a politician who attributes great significance to one's word, to friendship and to trust. We also saw this in the way he managed to keep his people together when political reality required them to swallow hard decisions without rebellions and without tricks. The story with Eisenkot, and especially the handshake that ultimately didn't materialize into a political agreement, he has not forgotten. Beyond the residue of the past, there is also the present. In the past week a wave of reports, articles and above all commentaries suddenly popped up calling on Yair Lapid to drop out. An article in Haaretz, some chatter by Ben Caspit on the matter, and other commentators and opinion leaders who raised the same possibility. Is it coincidental? Did everyone wake up the same week with the same thought? Or is someone in the political system making sure this idea circulates out there? In Yesh Atid, at least, there are those who suspect it is not a coincidence. The accusing finger is pointed toward Eisenkot and his circle. And this is no longer a story about past resentments, about honor or ego. It's a much more significant political story. @@@@@@@@@@@ After the slates closed, and in the time remaining until the election, the parties' main effort will of course be directed at moving voters between the two blocs. But beneath the surface another battle will be waged, no less fierce: cannibalizing votes within the blocs themselves. Eisenkot will try to take voters from Bennett and Lapid. Bennett and Lapid will try to take them back from Eisenkot. According to various checks and polls, a very significant part of past Yesh Atid voters have now moved to Eisenkot — in some checks at least 40 percent. Lapid doesn't intend to give up on them. As far as he's concerned, they're not lost voters but votes that need to be brought back home. And this is important far beyond the question of Yesh Atid's number of seats. Because if the change bloc wins, the big question of the day after will be who within it can demand the premiership. There is a dramatic difference between an outcome in which Eisenkot arrives with 24 seats and Bennett and Lapid with 15 each, and an outcome in which Eisenkot gets 20 and Bennett and Lapid approach him with 18. In the first scenario, Eisenkot is almost the landlord. In the second, everything is open. Suddenly one can talk about rotation. Suddenly Bennett and Liberman can put a different argument on the table: we have experience as prime minister and as senior ministers, together we hold many more seats, we will lead the government — and Eisenkot will get the defense portfolio. And these are only two out of countless possible scenarios. Therefore the battle within the change bloc is only beginning. Outwardly they will compliment each other and take care not to break the dishes. Inside they will fight over every seat, because every seat that moves from Lapid to Eisenkot, from Eisenkot to Bennett or from Bennett to Lapid doesn't necessarily change the size of the bloc, but it can completely change the balance of power within it. And in this election, the dramatic question may not be only which bloc won. But who won within the bloc that won. (Weekend column, Walla)
